East Meets West Orchestral Concert

The ‘East Meets West’ Orchestral Concert is a spectacular synthesis of classical music featuring internationally acclaimed masterpieces such as the classical Chinese compositions Spring Festival Suite and Tune of Meihu alongside the world-renowned Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1.

Led by up-and-coming Australian-Chinese conductor, Shilong Ye, a 50-piece orchestra from the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra will be performing alongside an exciting lineup of soloists including award-winning pianist Tony Tongyi Lee, talented Erhu instrumentalist Tuqiang Zhang, and Opera Australia's seasoned soprano Sharon Zhai.

Willoughby Symphony Orchestra

The programme for this concert features a colourful combination of classical masterpieces from the East and the West. Li Huanzhi’s (李焕之) joyful and exuberant piece, Spring Festival Suite, brings a delightful festive ambience to the stage as a chorus of cheery notes evokes the lively atmosphere of Chinese New Year celebrations. Erhu instrumentalist Tuqiang Zhang will continue to showcase these high spirits with his captivating performance of the classic Qin Erhu piece Tune of Meihu, a popular Chinese folk song originating from the yellow river era. Another Chinese classic New Horse Racing will be brought to the stage using a melange of traditional Chinese instruments to depict the exciting atmosphere of Mongolia’s traditional horse racing festival. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1. will also be performed by Chinese-Australian pianist Tony Lee in a showcase of world-class dynamics and exquisite technique, leaving listeners captivated as they are immersed in a splendid display of exquisite refinement.
