Student Visas

International students should apply for a single Student visa (subclass 500) regardless of their chosen course of study:

  • independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
  • schools (primary and secondary)
  • secondary school exchange program
  • vocational education and training (VET)
  • higher education
  • postgraduate research
  • non-award courses
  • international students sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs or Defence.

Student guardians should apply for the Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)

Business Innovation & Investment Visas

This Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) allows recipients to own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia

Business Innovation stream

This provisional visa is for inidividuals with the relevant business skills. It allows recipients to operate a new or existing business in Australia

  • Applicants must operate a new or existing business in Australia.
  • Applicants must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency.

Investor stream

This provisional visa is for applicants who have invested at least AUD2.5 million in Australian investments (subject to specific critera) and requires the maintainence of a business or investment activity in Australia.

  • Applicants must invest AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory.
  • Applicants must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency.

Significant Investor stream

This provisional visa is for individuals who have contributed at least AUD5 million towards Australian investments (subject to specific critera) and requires the maintainence of investment activity in Australia.

  • You must invest at least AUD5 million in complying significant investments in Australia.
  • You must be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency or Austrade.

Premium Investor stream

This provisional visa is for people who are nominated by Austrade and who invest at least AUD15 million in Australian investments and/or philanthropic contributions.

  • Applicants must contribute AUD15 million towards Australian investments and/or philanthropic contributions that meet specific requirements.
  • Applicants must be nominated by Austrade.

Entrepreneur stream

For startup and early stage entrepreneurs who have been endorsed to develop their concepts and have been nominated by a State or Territory government agency.

  • Applicants must have a funding agreement with a third party to carry out entrepreneurial activities.
  • Applicants must first be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency.

Business investment visas

This is a permanent class of visa for entrepreneurs, investors and business owners to continue activity in Australia, as well as those who are establishing a new business or developing an existing business in Australia.

  • Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888) – Sponsorship required
  • Business Talent (Permanent) visa (subclass 132) – Sponsorship needed (​This visa is closed to new applications from 1 July 2021)

Temporary Work Visas

A temporary work visa allows applicants to work in Australia on a temporary basis. There may be specific conditions associated with your visa that only allow certain types of work or work under a certain employer. You may be able to apply for a permanent visa related to your provisional visa.

List of temporary work visas available:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) – Sponsorship required
  • Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) – Graduate work
  • Skilled Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476)
  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)

New regional temporary work visas

From 16 November 2019, two new categories of skilled regional provisional visas were made available for skilled migrants and dependent family members seeking to live and work in regional Australia.

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – for individuals nominated by a State or Territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member to live and work in regional Australia.
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) – for individuals sponsored by an employer in regional Australia.

Permanent skilled migration visas

Visas for skilled migrants to live and work anywhere in Australia.

  • Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) – Sponsorship required
  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – Points-tested stream
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) – Sponsorship required
  • Skilled Regional visa (subclass 887)

Global talent visas

Visas for people who have an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievements in an eligible field, including Global Talent pathway and Distinguished Talent pathway applicants.

  • Global Talent visa (subclass 858)​ – Nomination needed
