Celebrate Lunar New Year with the Hong Kong String Orchestra’s Australian debut! Experience a unique blend of Chinese classics and Western masterpieces, including The Spring Festival Prelude by Li Huanzhi and Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and Strings in D minor. The program showcases traditional favorites like Yao Dance, Jasmine Flowers, and Ronald Fu’s Hong Kong Pop Song Medley, performed by a 28-piece ensemble with violins, violas, and cellos.   • Founded by Virtuoso Yao Jue, BBS, JP, Hong Kong String Orchestra (HKSO) strives to groom home-grown musical talent. Over the past ten years, the Orchestra has touched the lives of music lovers through its concert series and overseas exchange tours. The Orchestra continues to aim for artistic excellence and enjoys successful artistic collaborations with an array of international musicians, including Tan Dun, Sarah Chang, Qin Li-wei, Hayley Westenra, Andrés Cárdenes, and Lio Kuok-man. By cultivating bonds between gifted players and international maestros, the Orchestra reaches new heights of artistic endeavor.

    Under the leadership of Artistic Director Yao Jue, the Orchestra showcases Hong Kong musical talents to audiences all over the world. On tour, the Orchestra has represented Hong Kong for the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR and has been invited to perform in many countries, including the U.S., Finland, Sweden, and Korea. The Orchestra has also participated in the 19th China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the China International Youth Arts Festival, and performed at the concert hall of the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. In 2019, the Orchestra embarked on a “Belt and Road” initiative concert tour in Southeast Asia. Up to January 2020, the Orchestra has toured 9 countries and 32 cities.

  • A graduate of the Juilliard School under Dorothy DeLay, the San Francisco Conservatory under Zaven Melikian, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under Tan Su Zheng, Yao has performed numerous concerts and at music festivals worldwide. She made her New York debut before a full-house audience with standing room only at Carnegie Hall in 1993, and has performed in numerous international festivals and major concert halls, including The Ravinia Music Festival, The Aspen Music Festival, The Yachats Music Festival, The Avery Fisher Hall, The Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, The Herbst Theatre, and The Tchaikovsky Hall.

    Yao Jue’s professional career has been punctuated by widely acclaimed performances throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States. She was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017 and was the first Chinese musician to be received by President Castro (1926–2016) of Cuba. She was conferred the title of University Fellowship by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2015 and the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2023.

    Yao plays a 1713 Stradivarius violin.
